Coaching Athletes with a Disability

People with a disability who get involved in sport are athletes first and foremost - they have the same basic needs, drive, and dreams as any other athlete. For them as well, coaching is a crucial factor to the quality of their sport experience.

Many coaches who have never worked with athletes with a disability feel that, to be effective, they need highly specialized skills, knowledge, or training. This is a misperception. In fact, most coaches who work with athletes with a disability soon discover that coaching these participants is fundamentally no different than coaching any other athlete. Aboriginal Coaching

The Coaching Association of Canada (CAC) and the Aboriginal Sport Circle (ASC) view coaches as a cornerstone of community sport and recreation. They play a key role as agents of social change. Their guidance can have a direct and lasting impact on the healthy and active lifestyles of community members, especially youth.

Because of the important roles Aboriginal coaches play, the CAC and the ASC have made it a priority to educate, promote the value of certification, and establish meaningful participation of Aboriginal peoples in the NCCP.

The Aboriginal Coaching Program contains culturally relevant materials meant to engage Aboriginal coaches and empower them to make a positive, long-lasting impact in their communities.

Working with LGBTQ+ Athletes and Coaches

Although there has been progress in making sport more welcoming to those who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans (transgender), two-spirited, queer or questioning (LGBTQ), much more work needs to be done. Coaches play a critical role in creating a sport environment that is safe and respectful for all, regardless of ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation or gender identity. Leading the Way: Working with LGBT Athletes and Coaches is aimed at coaches to help them to ensure a sport environment that is welcoming for all.
